device memory guide

What stays where.

Onyx is browser-portable, but it is not a blank window onto a server. It can remember useful context on this device. This map shows the boundary, the crossings you choose, and the controls that erase local state without pretending server history changed.

01

The boundary is the feature.

Each row names the local copy, the only crossing, and what remains independent on the other side.

01Search Center
This device Searches loaded messages and the bounded local vault. Saved names, modes, and query text stay here.
Explicit server search
Connected server May search its archive for the active conversation when supported. Results are labelled separately.
02Reviewed anchors
This device Small metadata anchors reopen the exact catch-up span you reviewed. They are not message copies.
No automatic crossing
Connected server Room history follows the server's own retention. Clearing an anchor does not erase that history.
03Topic positions
This device Per-topic cursors remember a room or topic, message ID, and timestamp so navigation can resume precisely.
Portable file, if chosen
Connected server Does not need this local reading position. Messages and topic state remain separate from the cursor.
04Queued sends & drafts
This device Offline channel sends, room drafts, channel-topic drafts, and DM drafts contain unsent text here.
Send after reconnect
Connected server Receives a queued send only when Onyx reconnects. Encrypted DMs are never queued as plaintext.
05On-device translation
This device A supported browser model translates loaded text in the current view. Onyx marks the result as device-made.
No external endpoint
Connected server Receives neither the translation request nor its result. If the browser lacks a local model, Onyx says so.
06Encrypted-DM search
This device Decrypted plaintext exists only in transient loaded state. Search can match that visible text locally.
Query stays here
Connected server Stores and relays ciphertext, not searchable plaintext. Onyx blocks server search for encrypted DMs.

MEDIA This guide covers app memory. Live voice and video use the LADON/Ophion media path; they are not copied into the local message-history vault.

02

A transfer crosses device to device.

Preferences → Portable vault creates a JSON file only when you ask. You review a file again before importing and merging it on another Onyx device.

A This device Export selected portable state
Your JSON file Not a server sync; store and share it with care
B Your next device Review, then merge

Portable when present

The reviewed file can include

  • bounded vault-safe history; encrypted DMs remain ciphertext
  • reviewed anchors and topic read positions
  • room drafts and channel-topic drafts
  • followed rooms/topics and saved Search Center queries
  • saved sign-in targets, retention policy, and Preferences switches

Never exported automatically

Secrets stay out

  • passwords and session tokens
  • mesh tokens
  • decrypted encrypted-DM plaintext
  • direct-message draft plaintext
03

Clear the thing you mean.

Preferences exposes separate, confirmed controls. Each one verifies local storage before reporting success.

History

Clear local history

Erases the device vault, pending outbox, and topic read positions. It does not touch server history or another device.

Catch-up

Clear reviewed anchors

Removes only remembered review points; messages and topic cursors remain.

Search

Clear all saved searches

Removes saved names, modes, and query text without erasing message history.

Topics

Clear topic read positions

Removes per-topic cursors only; room messages and server history remain.

Unsent text

Discard local drafts

Removes room and channel-topic drafts. Direct-message drafts stay unless you edit or send them.

Outbox

Discard queued sends

Removes offline queued text before reconnect so it cannot be sent later.

Find every control: open Onyx → Preferences → Search & history. Turning off Remember conversations on this device also clears the local vault.

the short version

Local is useful. Local is visible. Local is yours to clear.
